Sæbøvik – Stavanger

We are somewhat on a schedule this morning, as we want to catch the ferry at 10.45. We arrive and have to wait a while for the ferry to pick us up. It takes 40 minutes to Leirvik where we take the E39 and then the 547 to Hagesund and Avaldsnes. This is a place of history, where Norway was ‘born’ in the 7th/8th centuries. Here the kings had their seat and were buried. The museum here is built into the ground, so not to disturb this historical landscape too much. There are burialmounds, the old castle has been excavated here, old harbors are found, and of course St. Olavs church (the current building built in the 1500’s). The exhibition at the museum is really good. It tells the story of Norway, mixed with its mythical stories, with artefacts and short films with translation through the audio tour that is included. With the same ticket you can stroll to the Viking farm on the island nearby, where boat-houses are built and people re-enact Viking living. They do tours, but we chose to walk around by ourselves. It is not big but a nice display and the buildings are beautiful. After this visit we do not really know where to go next. We know we need to go in the direction of Stavanger, and while on another ferry, we decided to actually go there and see is the city campsite has a park-up left for us (it’s already late in the afternoon). The campsite, located in a park by a lake, with bike lanes and paths going right trough it, and is busy, chaotic, but has a nice spot for us, way in the back on a relatively quiet spot. It is a big transition from the quiet to this place, but when I look outside, I see some camper and the lake, and I forget we are actually camping in a big city. Ready to explore it tomorrow.
Na een iet wat onrustige nacht staan we redelijk vlot op. We willen op tijd naar de veerpont die om 10.45 gaat. We zijn er meer dan ruim op tijd na een kort maar mooi ritje over Halsnøya. De overtocht duurt 40 minuten die we boven bij een groot raam doorbrengen. We varen naar Leirvik waar we de E39 een stukje oppikken. We pakken de 547 naar Haugesund en door naar Avaldsnes. Hier bezoeken we het historisch museum.
Avaldsnes is de plek waar Noorwegen als rijk is ‘geboren’ in de 7e/8e eeuw. Het museum is onder de grond gebouwd om de omgeving zo veel mogelijk in tact te laten.
Er is een kerk wat ooit onderdeel van het paleis van de koningen was.
Dat paleis hebben ze in 2017 opgegraven en zijn ze nog aan het onderzoeken, maar is helaas beperkt te bezichtigen (niet vandaag dus). De oude natuurlijke haven is nog zichtbaar en er zijn in de buurt verschillende grafheuvels gevonden inclusief boot-begrafenissen. Het museum heeft een mooie expositie die het verhaal van de koningen gemixt met de mythologie vertelt. Erg de moeite waard! We lopen daarna nog naar het viking boerderij op het eilandje vlak bij, onderdeel van de combi-ticket. Hier hebben ze boot-huizen nagebouwd uit de Vikingtijd en wordt het leven nagebootst. Leuk om te zien.
Dan rijden we verder, we weten niet zo goed nog waar naartoe. Maar richting Stavanger, en op weer een veerpont besluiten we maar gewoon naar de stadscamping te gaan om morgen de stad te bezoeken. De camping is groot en vol en een beetje chaotisch. Maar we krijgen een plekje achteraan en als ik nu naar buiten kijk zie ik een paar campertjes en het grote meer waar de camping aan ligt tussen de bomen door en vergeet ik bijna dat we in een stad zijn.
Het is even flink schakelen en we hebben ons een paar keer afgevraagd of we er goed aan hebben gedaan, maar al met al is het een prima plek. We hopen vooral dat de nacht rustig is.
